Every year we pick a very vaguely Christmas-related theme for our annual anthology. Then we invite our writers to subvert it. In this collection, they’ve certainly done that to the extent that we almost had a picture of cream crackers for the cover. Our theme this year is “crackers”. So, we have Christmas crackers, cream crackers, cracking dresses, a cracked antique and many, many other interpretations. We hope you will find this a cracking good read. Some fantastic writing was offered and the most of it was potentially publishable. We chose the pieces in this collection because they told a good story, had a strong voice and were imaginative in their interpretation of the theme. This anthology of literary fiction is so apt for the 21st Century.   This glittery collection of glit-er-ary tales will add some sparkle to your life. You will meet all kinds of interesting characters facing all kinds of interesting dilemmas. You will learn that all that gl...

Afterwards and Evergreen

Image
Girl is dead. She knows she is dead because she remembers dying. The afterlife is not what she had expected – she has awoken into a nightmare, in which everything seems hell-bent on killing her all over again. She is the only one who remembers what life was like before death and she has no idea why. Also, Girl has a secret. A secret which could end this strange world she has found herself in, if she manages to survive for long enough. As she begins to learn the horrifying truth about Afterwards, she is propelled into a journey which will change everything she thinks she knows about herself. Grim in places, Karen Kendrick’s Afterwards is also fast-paced and emotionally challenging. The only way to beat the game is to keep moving forwards, even if it means the end of the world. So what's the mood today? Espresso? Earl Grey tea? Hot chocolate with marshmallows? You'll find most drinks in our drinks index . This year, one of our experienced editors, Amanda Jones, selected the stories. We aimed to find between 3000 and 4000 words for each month. Sometimes we had one long story, other times several shorter ones. As with the e-zine for these, we look for a combination of shorter and longer stories, darker and more humorous ones, a few uplifting tales, and others that make you think, and we also like to showcase a variety of authors, including old friends and newcomers.   Everyone remembers what they were doing when the shocking news broke: when Kennedy was shot, when Princess Diana died and when the first plane crashed into the World Trade Centre on 9/11. Yet everyday lives continued with their own ups and downs. This collection shows us some of those possible stories and how they are gently connected with the day's world shattering event. A percentage of the author royalties will be donated to International Rescue Training Centre Wales (IRTCW), who provide search and rescue dogs to the Emergency services.     Do you believe in angels? This collection of fictional short stories explores encounters with angels - in whatever form they take. Some stories are sad, some are funny; all will touch you. The collection includes a new story by Laura Wilkinson, author of "BloodMining" (winner of the Bridge House Debut Novel Competition 2010). The foreword is written by TV and Radio Presenter, Gloria Hunniford, and for every copy sold ...
